There's concerns over photos of Kobe and Gigi Bryant's helicopter accident which was taken by deputies who responded to the day of the crash. However, they were instructed to keep the photos hidden.
Top members of the department were well-informed of their lower-positioned deputies photo-taking the accident followed by the remains that were discovered, according to TMZ. In addition, they have shown it to people throughout the department.
Photos were also transmitted to the Lost Hills police station with a message that reads "If you got Kobe pics -- come in, come clean and delete them. Do that, and you won't be punished," as reported by TMZ. The message was a direct order by officers in command.
What's even more strange is that the department kept the evidence as a secret when being questioned by L.A. Times about their scandal of a formal inquiry. TMZ also reported that a few deputies captured photos of the remains just days after the helicopter accident.
It was definitely noticed that the sheriff's department kept everything sealed until their cover was almost exposed.
In a statement released on Friday, the department explained that captain Alex Villanueva was "deeply disturbed at the thought deputies can allegedly engage in such an insensitive act." They went onto say that their looking into the situation, stating, "A thorough investigation will be conducted by the department, with the No. 1 priority of protecting the dignity and privacy of the victims and their families."
One question remains for the sheriff, and that's why exactly were the photos, and evidence kept behind doors, along with why punishment wasn't a main factor until after the department noticed that the secret could no longer be held.
