Reggie Rude Discusses 'New Rules' Movement, And Unreleased Music

Updated: Jan 15, 2020

Bronx artist Reggie Rude creates his own rules in the hip hop game as founder of New Rules movement, and it's clearly demonstrated in his latest single entitled "Trippy" where the artist provides a southern rhythm.

"Trippy," is currently available on all streaming platforms. However, the BX artist also has unreleased heat which he has kept for a minute up to this point when he works on his upcoming project "Night Rider".

Before he gears up to release his "Night Rider" project, check out Rude's interview where he discussed the "New Rules Movement," the rapper's plan to make an impact in hip-hop music, and his unreleased single "2 Cold" below:

News For People: When did you decide to pursue a career in music?

Reggie Rude: When I was a kid, the first music video I remember seeing was Aaliyah's visual for "Are You That Somebody?" and I immediately fell in love with her. In my head, I felt that if I became an entertainer I would be able to get close to her so I decided to become a singer/dancer. That eventually morphed into wanting to be a rapper at around 11 or 12.

News For People: How would you describe your music?

Reggie Rude: My music is what I like to call a "Generational/Lunch table bridge". Its full of the moods and nuances of my generations music, but filled with the lyrical capabilities and originality of the generations that came before. I'm capable of letting the gang bangers feel cool with the nerds...the emo kids feel like they're homies with the jocks. And since i'm also a film maker and pull influence from that medium, I guess saying my music is cinematic is also appropriate. Just check my discography, ha!

News For People: What makes your music stand out from other hip hop artists?

Reggie Rude: Building a comradery between the "old heads" and the "new school" is a cool challenge for me, but a necessary one. I'm not afraid to wear my influences and REAL LIFE experiences on my sleeve. And i'm not afraid to experiment with themes and sounds. I hate feeling like i'm in a rut sonically.

News For People: Who are some of your influences in rap music?

Reggie Rude: My biggest influences are as follows: Jay-Z, Biggie, Kanye, Eminem, 50 Cent, Drake and Project Pat. But my influences are not bound by rap. Michael Jackson is my biggest influence overall followed by guys like Prince, Kurt Cobain, Punk Adams and Justin Vernon. And as far as film goes my guys David Lynch, Jordan Peele, David Williams and Chris Nolan are my beacons.

News For People: What motivated you to come up with the idea of the New Rules Movement, as co-developer of "23rd Industries."

Reggie Rude: The New Rules movement is an attempt at building an entity that encompasses more than rap at its core. I'm a fan of ART and all its mediums. So I felt that building New Rules around art itself was and is a cool venture for my personally. I'm still working out the kinks though haha.

News For People: What would you want people to know about the New Rules Movement?

Reggie Rude: That there is more to be done as a collective than as individuals. Art is culture binder and universal language and that is something we are trying to tap into. Everyone has a home here. Eat your vegetables.

News For People: What's your thoughts on the current status of hip hop music?

Reggie Rude: I think that we need to stop asking each other that question for a genre of music, thats only in its 40s. We are the only genre that continually asks this question and I think it puts a damper on what rap could be and can become. I think rap is in a wonderfully confused state and is learning itself as it grows to become more of a powerhouse than it already is.

News For People: How do you plan to make an impact in hip hop music? Reggie

Rude: I plan to make an impact on this genre by growing with it and help leading it to a beautiful place. I'm a BIG supporter of protecting and nurturing our culture, cause since we came here on slave ships, I think Hip-Hop is the biggest thing we have resembling an "identity". I just wanna help shape it further.

News For People: What makes your unreleased single "2 Cold" different from your other singles, like "Trippy," and "Raw Is War," which you've previous released?

Reggie Rude: "2Cold" was actually one of the first songs I did when working on my upcoming project "NightRider". When I get into "project mode", I live in the world of what i'm making, and since the development of "NightRider" and my previous project "Halloween" kinda blended together, so did the mood. Making "2Cold" actually led me on a course correction for the rest of what i was doing on "NightRider" because it came out more aggressive than I wanted it to. I HATE doing albums with back to back repetitive themes so at the suggestion of my brother Punk Adams, I decided to pull the song back before releasing it. It will def be a bonus track or something though cause its really good.

News For People: What was your mindset on when recording "Trippy" ?

Reggie Rude: When I first made the melody for the song, I said to myself "Yup. I finally did it". Since the early stages of my career, I always wanted to fully tap into my southern influences in Project Pat, 3-6 and N.O Bounce. On all of my projects there is at least one song that incorporates all these sounds besides N.O bounce. So, in short, I was hype.

News For People: Are you planning to work on a music video for your latest released single, "Trippy"?

Reggie Rude: Yes, I am working on it as we speak. But i'm a complicated asshole that wants to make sure themes fit and i'm not releasing a visual without substance. I mean, I love booty shaking as much as the next guy, but I LOVE nuanced booty shaking.

News For People: What motivates you to continue your journey in the music business as a hip hop artist?

Reggie Rude: Art is all I know. It's all i'm really good at at the end of the day. It's my only escape from the mundane and it really keeps me going and motivated to live a life with MEANING.

News For People: What would you want people to know about you as a hip hop artist?

Reggie Rude: That i'm a human being with thoughts, feelings and opinions and I live them through my art. Though sometimes exaggerated, never outright false or lies. Grow with me ya'll.

News For People: Are there any artists who you would like to collaborate with someday?

Reggie Rude: YES! Jigga Man for sure. He's the bar i'm trying to reach. He's my living idol. So yeah, Jay-Z, Kanye, Justin Vernon, James Blake, Tyga, Chris Brown, Fall Out Boy, CupCakke, Beyonce. Weird list that I can't even finish cause i'm a fan of so many artists haha

News For People: What advise would you give to a young rap artist who is also perusing their career in music?

Reggie Rude: DO NOT GIVE UP. DO NOT SLOW DOWN. DO NOT LET OTHER PEOPLE TELL YOU WHO YOU ARE. ONLY YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. WATCH THE COMPANY YOU KEEP. LOVE YOURSELF. DON'T NEGLECT THE ONES THAT LOVE YOU. BE HONEST AND SELFLESS. BUT BE SELFISH WHEN YOU NEED TO BE.

News For People: What else can people expect from you as a rap artist?

Reggie Rude: People can expect the unexpected.

News For People: Is there anything you would like to add?

Reggie Rude: "Night Rider" coming out soon ya'll! I put my all into this project and i've grown because of it. BE YOU, LOVE YOURSELF AND BE KIND TO OTHERS
